Long weekend…

May 30, 2008

…for most of us except for Kellaz and yours truly who are working today though he got Monday off he said. Lucky you! Most of my siblings are away due to the long weekend, to where else? They left early evening yesterday for Miri and I sincerely wish them a pleasant trip. Myself? Well, the border is the last place one earth that I want to be at the moment. Hundreds of Bruneian residents would surely be border hopping as I type and lines and lines of sedans, SUVs and 4WDs plus the heat aren’t just my cup of tea, or coffee for that matter.

My sister asked to join her as I would be off tomorrow but I have tonnes to do with the top priority is to look for household furniture and stuff as my family and I prepare for our new home sweet home.

‘So,’ sis insisted, ‘buy in Miri!’

Hmm…nice thought but I went to Miri a couple of months ago and errmm…sorry, I prefer the designs here in Brunei though the former has far cheaper ones. Also, buy in Brunei and it will be good for Brunei’s economy (cheewaahhh). So, sorry sis, maybe next time…

So why the long weekend you asked? Because tomorrow is the 47th anniversary of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces and this year the celebration would be held at Lumut Camp. I have never been there and my other sister and hubby thought they would go tomorrow and spend their Saturday there. Their three-year old son, my nephew, is crazy about cars and guns and all things that are not sugar and spice, so yes, the military day would befit both son and dad. Boys would be boys, eh.

A brief history of RBAF (from its website):

The Royal Brunei Armed Forces was formed on the 31st May 1961. Known as ‘ASKAR MELAYU BRUNEI’, (‘BRUNEI MALAY REGIMENT’) it was honoured with the royal title on the 31st May 1965 when the word ‘DIRAJA’was added to the title. It was then known as ‘ASKAR MELAYU DIRAJA BRUNEI’, (‘ROYAL BRUNEI MALAY REGIMENT’). Since Independence Day on 1st January 1984, the Royal Brunei Malay Regiment is renamed as Angkatan Bersenjata Diraja Brunei (‘ROYAL BRUNEI ARMED FORCES’).

Now please don’t ask me why RBAF’s day has been declared as a public holiday and not the Police Force or other organisation; maybe Mr Resourceful Brunei could help answer this please?
