Today is the 13th day of the month of Syaban. The significance of this month is the Nisfu Syaban which falls on the 15th of the month, corresponding to this Sunday, 17 August 2008 for this year.
Nisfu is Arabic for half, hence the 15th. It was said that this night is the second best after the Malam Lailatul Qadar (which falls in the month of Ramadhan). With this in mind, Muslims have two more weeks to go for the holy month. (Ya Allah, panjangkan lah umur kami dan semoga kami mendapat lagi bulan Ramadhan untuk tahun ini, amin).
I found out from one website here that there would be an eclipse of the moon for three hours on that Sunday as from 3.40 am. Sorry am not sure if Brunei would be able to see but I will try to keep an eye (or half of my eye open). If Bruneians noticed, it was almost full moon last night so by the 15th it should be a full moon, right. Hope weather permits.
Now I don’t want to go into details on what Muslims should do on Nisfu Syaban as there have been a lot of debates going on on the validity of such claims. Read more here.
Usually, on the eve of Nisfu Syaban, we read the Surah Yaasin thrice with each reading followed by a specific prayer. The first was to pray for longevity so we would be able to serve Allah; the second was to pray for more wealth and the last to pray for a strong faith, and to die in Islamic faith and other good prayers we wish for.
I was checking on the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ website to confirm on what we should do on the eve of Nisfu Syaban. I found out that ‘the question has not been answered by the staff and that they will give one later’. It’s only a day left isnt it.
Anyway, there will be a mass recitation of Surah Yaasin tomorrow evening at all main mosques and religious halls with the main focus at the Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah starting at six in the evening. See you there?
