Astaghafirruallhil’azim. Without me realising it, we are in the 13th day of Rejab now. Rejab or Rajaba (Arabic: رجب) is the seventh month in the Islamic calendar. The lexical definition of Rajaba is “to respect”, which is where the word Rajab has been derived from. This month was regarded as one of the sacred months in which battles were prohibited in the days of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
The month is also a prelude to the month of Ramadan, because Ramadan follows it after the intervening month of Sha’ban. Therefore, when Muhammad sighted the moon of Rajab, he used to pray to Allah in the following words:
“O Allah, make the months of Rajab and Sha’ban blessed for us, and let us reach the month of Ramadan (i.e. prolong our life up to Ramadan, so that we may benefit from its merits and blessings).”
The significant event of this month is of course the Isra’ Mi’raj or the ascension of the prophet to heaven. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has said that the month of Rejab is God’s month. ‘Those who fast just for a day in this month with sincerity will be blessed by God. Those who fast on the 27th of Rejab corresponding to Wednesday 30th July 2008, which is the Isra’ Miraj will be given with the reward which is equivalent to five years of fasting.’
The prophet then said: ‘On the night of the Mi’raj (ascending to heaven), I saw a river where its water was sweeter than honey, cooler than iced water and more fragrant than a perfume. I asked Jibrail, the angel, on what is that river. Jibrail said the river is for those who praise you in Rejab, o Prophet’.
One of the prophet’s loyal followers was Tsauban who narrated: “While we were passing a cemetery with the prophet, he stopped and cried with sadness. He then prayed to Allah swt. I asked him why he was crying. He said that, ‘Oh Tsauban, those in the graves are being punished and so I pray to God that He lightened the punishment. Only if they fast just for one day and pray for one night in Rejab, they wouldn’t be punished in the life-after.
“I then asked the prophet if by fasting or praying at night just for once in that month would avoid the punishment in the graves. The prophet said yes. Any man or woman who do so with pure intention would be rewarded with a year-long fasting or praying. Rejab is God’s month, Sya’ban my month and Ramadhan is the month for my ummah. All human will suffer from hunger and thirst in the Judgement Day except the prophets, their families and those who fast in Rejab, Sya’ban and Ramadhan.
